Detailed Investigations

How investigation technology benefits trees and our clients

As trees age they naturally decay and hollow, as well as bearing the scars of damaging past events - storm damage and/or site development. These features give older trees tremendous ecological, cultural and aesthetic values but they can also give rise to safety concerns.

Our Resistograph helps us make an accurate assessment of the tree’s structural condition and health without the need to carry out destructive tests, which could open up the tree to harmful pathogens, causing further decay. Additionally, Resistograph and Air Spade investigations provide the physical evidence required to support our management decisions.

Resistograph Tree Analysis

The Resistograph is a sophisticated hand-held device used to detect internal cavities, decay and cracks in trees while causing minimal harm. We then use the drill resistance measurements, recorded by the drill, to analyse the quality of the tree’s timber.

The quality of the tree’s timber can be accurately interpreted, as in the examples below, and compared against published failure criteria to determine the likelihood of a structural failure.

Air Spade investigation

The Air Spade is an extremely useful tool for investigations of potential defects affecting tree roots. Using compressed air and a special lance, we can expose and examine tree roots, without the damage caused by conventional excavations.
